The Less I Know The Better (unedited)

It’s close to one in the morning, and fucking Connor hasn’t come home yet. He’s been doing this a lot lately. I pace our room trying to stay awake, hoping I’ll have luck in catching him walking in tonight. I look out our apartment window; the lights scattered across the city seem duller than usual. Any other time I’d find it beautiful if I had him to share the moment with. I wonder what--or who he’s doing right now.
At three I hear the noticeable click of our lock before rushing out to him, “oh Dominic, you're still up.”
“Well yeah,” I reply walking closer, the smell of another man on his clothes. “I was getting worried, who were you with?”
“No one, don't worry ‘bout it baby. The foods in the fridge or oven?”
“Fridge. I hope you don’t mind if I sit with you while you eat.”
He shakes his head as he walks past me to the kitchen. I follow just in time for him to see him push the start button. My hand brushes his back as I walk by to the table. A minute later he joins me, starting to eat his chicken casserole, “late work night?”
Connor hums, scarfing the leftovers down, “yup I had to start the financial report over a dumb mistake James made.”
Mom always says the less I know the better, “you haven't talked about him before, he’s new?”
He pauses for a moment before quickly adding, “friend of the CEO, probably going to be my boss soon.”
“I'm curious if today was his first day.”
Connor’s eyes flick away from mine as he taps his fingers on his lips, “first real day yes.”
My eyes scan his neck, lo-and-behold a new red mark, “looks like you hurt yourself. Last time I checked you didn't need your neck to do financial reports.”
“Dominic, what are you implying?”
“Nothing, nothing just wondering how close you are to this James.”
“I’m not sleeping with him if that’s what you're thinking.”
With the tilt of my head I drum a steady beat on the plastic table, “that’s what I'm asking.”
“You're being crazy.”
"I'll ask point blank this time. Are. You. Cheating. On. Me?"
Silence engulfs us as my eyes stay locked on him. Connor rubs his mouth, “I--uh.”
“Don't. Don't lie to me.”
He slams his fist on the table, “Goddamnit, yes! Yes I have been seeing someone else.”
“James.”
Connor nods, “him.”
“Okay,” I breathe, “leave if he can make you happier. Go move in with him.”
“Babe?”
“No that won't work this time.”
He leaves behind the little bit of food he had left. I get up and follow him up to the doorway of our room. My heart breaks as I watch him throw his clothes in a suitcase. Now it's close to two in the morning, and my ex boyfriend’s left with a bag packed.
